HEY I'M CATHERINE.jpg

I’m a Toronto-based freelance artist who works in many mediums: photography, lettering, painting, pom poms and whatever else I can get my hands on. While I’ve always been a maker it wasn’t until I had my daughter in 2015 that I quit my 10-year career in fundraising and transitioned to making art full time. The thread that runs through my work is embracing that which is imperfect, messy and human. When I was pregnant I was diagnosed with OCD and in my lowest days I made a promise to myself that if I could climb out of the darkness, I would do more of what I know deep down I’m meant to do. I consider art-making to be a spiritual practice that can bring a sense of healing (state of FLOW) and balance into the lives of both artist and viewer. I intend to surprise and delight through playful and bold use of colour. I don’t take art making too seriously and let my creative intuition lead the way. I score extraordinarily low on the bullshit-o-meter, and high on the realness scale. My hobbies include rearranging furniture, doing the running man to anything produced by Teddy Riley and talking about feelings and “what’s really going on” with other women over coffee.

I aim to make people feel more seen and heard, especially those most burdened by the realities of living in this unjust world of isms and phobias: racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia and so many more. I see you. And I see how us white women have caused and continue to cause so much harm. I’m trying to unlearn all the BS that has kept me both up and asleep, and black and brown people down. I work towards a more humane world for my daughter, and all children, to grow up in.
